Stage Fright Is Just Excitement Wearing a Disguise

A student who has nailed the routine for weeks suddenly can't feel their legs backstage. Racing heart, cold hands, the overwhelming urge to be anywhere else.
Here's the reframe that changes everything: physiologically, fear and excitement are nearly identical. Same adrenaline, same heart rate, same butterflies. The only difference is the story you attach to the sensation.
Performance energy, not panic
Instead of telling yourself to calm down — which rarely works — try saying "I'm excited" out loud. Studies show this simple relabelling improves performance because it works with the adrenaline instead of fighting it.
Add the performer's toolkit: slow exhales longer than your inhales, a physical warm-up that shakes the tension out, and one trusted face in the audience to dance to. The nerves never fully disappear, even for professionals. They just become fuel.
